Maintain Your Car to Increase Fuel Economy

There are several steps that you can take to increase your fuel economy. Consider these suggestions before you head out on your next adventure.

If your first stop is the gas station, then take a second to peek in the owner’s manual to see what level octane is recommended by the manufacturer. Using gas with a higher octane level can cause your vehicle to not burn gas efficiently. Many vehicles do great on lower octane gas.

Do not leave the gas station without checking your tire pressure with a reliable tire gauge. Driving on tires that are not properly inflated is not only hard on the tires, but it can lower your fuel economy by up to 10 percent. Find the maximum pounds per square inch (PSI) number on the side of the tire to make sure yours are properly inflated.

Consider your route before heading out of the station. While driving fewer miles will not raise your fuel economy, planning ahead of time may allow you to save money by driving fewer miles.
