The Future of Autonomous Technology is Surprisingly Cheesy... and Oven-Baked

It looks like the future of intelligent machines is going to be cheesy... but don't worry, we don't mean in the same way as Bicentennial Man. Self-driving cars are being designed and tested as we speak to transport melted cheese, and tomato sauce, all on a crispy oven-baked crust.

This September, Domino's will be making select deliveries using an autonomous Ford Fusion Hybrid.

"As delivery experts, we've been watching the development of self-driving vehicles with great interest as we believe transportation is undergoing fundamental, dramatic change," said Patrick Doyle, Domino's president and CEO. "We pride ourselves on being technology leaders and are excited to help lead research into how self-driving vehicles may play a role in the future of pizza delivery. This is the first step in an ongoing process of testing that we plan to undertake with Ford."

As Doyle says, the testing this September is only a first step. Ford Motor Company has announced plans to produce a highly-autonomous vehicle for a ride-hailing service by 2021, so North Aurora pizza-lovers shouldn't get their hopes up of seeing a driverless delivery car before then.

For those who are curious about this new technology, we invite you to visit Fox Valley Ford to test drive a new 2017 Ford Fusion, which contains many "semi-autonomous" innovations based on the work done on its self-driving counterpart.
